Can an AI assistant build a website or app for you?

Short answer

A simple one, yes. Claude builds single-page websites, dashboards and small interactive tools as artifacts next to the chat, on every plan including Free. Gemini's Canvas, open to all Gemini users, turns a description into a working, shareable first draft of an app or game, and can turn a document into a web page. Neither help page describes hosting a full multi-page site on your own domain. We couldn't open OpenAI's help pages, so ChatGPT isn't covered here yet.

Which products can do it?

  • Anthropic ClaudeYes

Claude makes single-page websites, dashboards and small interactive tools as artifacts, on Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans; some artifacts can use Claude themselves, as small AI-powered apps.

Good to know: Needs the code execution and file creation setting on. Artifacts start private; storage is capped at 20 MB, text only. Dashboards templates aren't on Free.

  • Google GeminiYes

Gemini's Canvas writes the code for a working, shareable first draft of an app, game or infographic from a description, and can turn a document or Deep Research report into a web page; Google says it's available for all Gemini users.

Good to know: AI Pro and Ultra add Google's top model and a 1 million token context window. Text style and format can only be edited in the web app on a computer.

Why it matters

Small businesses and hobbyists want a landing page, a calculator or a simple game without hiring a developer or learning to code.

How well the results hold up as a real, public website: hosting, your own domain, search visibility and upkeep aren't covered by either help page. No independent test in our sources compares the two.

"What are artifacts and how do I use them?" help article (read Oct 31, 2026): artifacts are things Claude makes that open next to the chat and can be edited, reused and shared, such as documents, code snippets, single-page websites, diagrams, dashboards and small interactive tools; some artifacts can call Claude themselves, so they work as small AI-powered apps, with usage counted against each user's own plan. Creating artifacts in a chat is available on Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans; Dashboards templates are not on Free. It needs the code execution and file creation capability turned on, and artifacts start out private. Artifact storage is capped at 20 MB, text only. The page doesn't describe hosting a full website on your own domain.

Google's Canvas overview page (read Oct 31, 2026, English version): you pick Canvas below the prompt bar and describe an idea, and Canvas writes the code for a working, shareable first draft of an app, game or infographic; a Create button turns a document or Deep Research report into a web page, infographic, quiz or audio overview. Canvas is available for all Gemini users; Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get Google's most capable model (the page still names Gemini 3) and a 1 million token context window. Canvas projects open in the mobile app, but text style and format can only be edited in the Gemini web app on a computer.
