Does Alexa+ work on older Echo devices?
Short answer
Most of them, yes. Amazon's list of Echo devices that will never get Alexa+ is short: the Echo (1st and 2nd Gen), Echo Dot (1st Gen), Echo Plus (1st Gen), Echo Show (1st and 2nd Gen), Echo Spot (1st Gen), Echo Buds (1st Gen) and Amazon Tap. An Echo Dot (2nd Gen or later, including the 3rd Gen) isn't on that list, and BGR lists it as compatible. Devices on the list keep working with the original Alexa, even on an account that has Alexa+.
Which products can do it?
- Amazon Alexa+Yes
Alexa+ works on Echo devices except a short list of early models: Echo (1st and 2nd Gen), Echo Dot (1st Gen), Echo Plus (1st Gen), Echo Show (1st and 2nd Gen), Echo Spot (1st Gen), Echo Buds (1st Gen) and Amazon Tap.
Good to know: Per Amazon's help page; Amazon says listed devices will never be compatible and keep the original Alexa. Fire TV on Fire OS 5 and Fire tablets on Fire OS 7 or earlier are excluded too.
Why it matters
Many homes have Echo speakers that are five or more years old, and owners want to know whether the new Alexa reaches them or means buying new hardware.
Not proven yet
Whether every feature works the same on older, lower-powered Echo models; Amazon's list only says which devices are compatible. Speakers from other brands with Alexa built in, such as Sonos, aren't covered by the Amazon page we read.
How we know (2 sources)
BGR's rundown of Echo speakers that work with Alexa+ (read Oct 31, 2026): Echo Dot and Echo Dot Kids from the 2nd generation on, Echo Pop, Echo Spot (2nd Gen) and current Echo Show models such as the Show 5, 8 and 11 work; first-generation models, Echo Show 1st and 2nd Gen and Amazon Tap don't. Links to Amazon's list of incompatible devices and says Amazon plans to widen support over time. The article is inconsistent about Echo Studio.
Read the sourceAmazon help page "Compatibility of Alexa+ with Alexa Built-in Devices" (read Oct 31, 2026; the amazon.com help URL returned an error, this is Amazon's own help-system copy): Alexa+ isn't compatible with Echo (1st and 2nd Gen), Echo Dot (1st Gen), Echo Plus (1st Gen), Echo Buds (1st Gen), Echo Show (1st and 2nd Gen), Echo Spot (1st Gen), Amazon Tap, Fire TV devices on Fire OS 5 and Fire tablets on Fire OS 7 or earlier. Amazon says these will never be compatible; on an account with Alexa+ they keep the original Alexa. Points to amazon.com/alexaplus to check availability by country.
