Do smart glasses work without a phone or Wi-Fi?
Short answer
Partly. Meta says its AI glasses still take photos and videos when they aren't connected to the Meta AI app, and that capture and some voice controls work without Wi-Fi. Meta AI, importing your photos and videos, and software updates need a Wi-Fi connection. The Meta Ray-Ban Display has the same split, and you need a supported phone with the Meta AI app to set it up.
Which products can do it?
- Meta Ray-Ban DisplayYes
Meta says the Ray-Ban Display can capture and use some voice controls without Wi-Fi, while Meta AI, importing captures and updates need it.
Good to know: Setup needs a supported phone (Android 10+ or iOS 14.4+) with the Meta AI app and a Meta account.
- Meta Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2)Yes
Meta says its AI glasses can take photos and videos without a connection to the Meta AI app, and capture and some voice controls work without Wi-Fi.

Whether Meta AI works over a phone's mobile data instead of Wi-Fi; Meta's help pages only mention Wi-Fi, and we haven't tested it. How long photos can pile up on the glasses before you must import them.
How we know (2 sources)
"How to use AI glasses" (read Nov 4, 2026): when the glasses aren't connected to the Meta AI app you can still take photos and videos, check the battery by voice (if voice control is on) and play audio from a phone over Bluetooth. Without Wi-Fi you can still capture and use some voice controls; Meta AI, importing captures and installing updates need Wi-Fi. The article covers Meta's AI glasses in general, not one model.
Read the source"What you need to use Meta Ray-Ban Display" (updated about two weeks before Oct 22, 2026): pair with the Meta AI app on a supported phone running Android 10 or later (location on) or iOS 14.4 or later, plus a Meta account and Wi-Fi. A phone not on Meta's supported list can't be paired. Captures and some voice controls work without Wi-Fi; Meta AI, importing captures and updates need it.
