Has a humanoid robot worked on a car assembly line?
Short answer
Yes, at least one has. Figure says its Figure 02 humanoid worked an 11-month deployment at BMW's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, loading sheet-metal parts for welding on 10-hour weekday shifts, and helped build more than 30,000 BMW X3s. Figure retired the F.02 fleet in September 2026, so the robot that did this work is no longer in service.
Which robots can do it?
- Figure AI Figure 02Yes
Figure says Figure 02 loaded 90,000+ sheet-metal parts over 1,250+ hours on an active BMW assembly line in Spartanburg, contributing to 30,000+ BMW X3s.
Good to know: Figure's own report (Nov 2025), not BMW's. A pick-and-place job, not a home chore. Figure retired the F.02 fleet in September 2026.
Why it matters
Humanoid makers promise robots for the home; a long run of real factory work is one way to judge whether the hardware holds up outside a demo.
Not proven yet
Independent figures from BMW on the robot's speed, error rate or cost; the numbers come from Figure. Whether Figure 03 has taken over the BMW work; we found only unconfirmed reports.
How we know (2 sources)
Figure's report on its 11-month Figure 02 deployment at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg (read Oct 28, 2026): the robot loaded sheet-metal parts onto a welding fixture on an active assembly line, on a 10-hour shift Monday to Friday. Figure counts 90,000+ parts loaded over 1,250+ hours of runtime, contributing to 30,000+ BMW X3s; each part had to be placed within 5 mm in about 2 seconds. These are Figure's own figures, not BMW's.
Read the sourceFigure's post "F.02 Decommission" (re-read Oct 28, 2026): as its F.03 fleet grows, maintaining the F.02 fleet no longer makes sense. It lists F.02's firsts, including Figure's first deployment at BMW and its first household chores. Most of the F.02 fleet was melted down at a foundry in Imatra, Finland; a few remain in storage at Figure's headquarters, and the metal is being made into a limited series of commemorative pieces for sale.
