Can a robot mower cut right up to the edges?
Short answer
Closer than before, but most owners still trim. Mammotion says the LUBA mini 2 AWD's edge disc reaches within 2.1 in of a wall, and Ecovacs says the Goat O800 RTK rides over passable edges and leaves about 5 cm (2 in) by obstacles. A reviewer of Mammotion's Luba 3 still trims along the driveway and fence by hand.
Which robots can do it?
- Ecovacs Goat O800 RTKYes
Ecovacs says the Goat O800 RTK's TruEdge cuts over passable edges and leaves about a 5 cm gap near obstacles; Netzwelt's test rated its automatic edge detection very good.
Good to know: The 5 cm figure is from Ecovacs. Netzwelt's hands-on (one unit) judged edge detection, not how close it cuts.
- Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWDYes
Mammotion specs a fixed 4.7 in edge-cutting disc on the LUBA mini 2 AWD that reaches to within 2.1 in of a wall.
Good to know: Maker's spec, not a test result.
Why it matters
A mower that stops short of fences, beds and paths leaves a strip of long grass that you have to go after with a string trimmer.
Not proven yet
Independent measurements of how much grass each mower leaves at a fence or wall. The edge figures here are the makers' own; Ecovacs' comparison with other mowers is from its own tests.

Read the sourceGerman hands-on test of the Ecovacs Goat O800 RTK, a wire-free RTK mower: grade 1.6 (good), with good obstacle detection and very good automatic edge detection. Satellite reception was stubborn at first, and it had slight trouble on slopes when wet. From €699.

Re-read Oct 25, 2026: TruEdge cuts to the edge, riding over passable edges with "zero-edge cutting" and leaving about a 5 cm gap near obstacles (Ecovacs contrasts this with 40 cm+ for other mowers, from its own tests). Multiple zones, each with its own speed, cutting height and obstacle-avoidance height; the map editor can add, merge, split and delete areas. Mows in U-shaped paths. Cutting height 3 to 8 cm, adjustable in 0.5 cm steps and described as automated.
