Does a robot mower collect or mulch the clippings?

Short answer

It mulches them. The robot mowers we track have no grass bag: they cut a few millimeters at a time, often, and leave the fine clippings on the lawn to break down. Husqvarna, Mammotion and Ecovacs all say this feeds the lawn as natural fertilizer. If you want clippings collected, Mammotion's YUKA line is the exception it names, with a collection feature.

Which robots can do it?

  • Husqvarna Automower 410 iQYes

Husqvarna says Automower clippings are so small they don't need collecting: they fall to the soil and mulch as natural fertilizer, which it says gives a denser, healthier lawn.

Good to know: Maker's description of all Automower models, not a test. Husqvarna also says to cut an overgrown lawn down before a robot takes over.

  • Ecovacs Goat O800 RTKYes

Ecovacs says its GOAT mowers have no way to pick up clippings and instead finely mulch the grass as they cut, leaving clippings that decompose quickly.

Good to know: Maker's blog; it names other GOAT models, not the O800 RTK.

  • Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWDYes

Like the rest of Mammotion's LUBA line, the LUBA mini 2 AWD has no grass bag; Mammotion says its fine clippings mulch back into the lawn.

Good to know: Maker's blog about its mowers in general, not this model by name.

  • Mammotion Luba 3 AWDYes

Mammotion says its robot mowers cut small amounts at a time and leave fine clippings that decompose as natural fertilizer, with no collection bag.

Good to know: Maker's blog about its mowers in general; it names the LUBA line but not the Luba 3 by name. Only Mammotion's YUKA mowers collect clippings.

Why it matters

Bagging and raking clippings is half the work of mowing, and people want to know if a robot leaves a mess behind or a better lawn.

Not proven yet

How much mulching actually improves a lawn or cuts fertilizer use; the makers say it does, but we haven't read an independent test. None of these makers' pages say how their mowers handle fallen leaves, and the Mammotion and Ecovacs posts describe their mowers in general, not these exact models.

How we know (5 sources)
  1. MammotionFrom the company

Mammotion blog on how robot mowers work (read Oct 26, 2026): its blades cut a little at a time and leave fine clippings that decompose as natural fertilizer (mulching). The FAQ says robot mowers usually have no collection bag, but Mammotion's YUKA mowers do. Names LUBA, LUBA 2 and YUKA, not the Luba 3 or LUBA mini 2.

  2. EcovacsFrom the company

Ecovacs US blog on how robot mowers work (read Oct 26, 2026): robot mowers have no mechanism to pick up clippings; they cut small amounts often and finely mulch the grass, and the clippings decompose quickly and act as natural fertilizer, so there's no need to collect grass. Names the GOAT O1000 RTK and A3000 LiDAR, not the O800.

Husqvarna guide to cutting an overgrown lawn (New Zealand site, read Oct 25, 2026): take off about half the height on the first cut, with a line trimmer for knee-high grass; trim again a few days later to about 6 inches; mow about 8 days after the first cut and lower the height by about a third each time. Only after that does it suggest a robot mower, to keep the lawn at height on a schedule.

Husqvarna explainer on where Automower clippings go (Australian site, read Oct 26, 2026): the mower keeps short grass short, cutting a few millimeters at a time with three sharp blades as the grass grows, so the clippings are small enough to stay on the lawn, where they break down as mulch and natural fertilizer. Contrasts this with bagging clippings after a traditional mow. Doesn't mention leaves or wet grass.

Husqvarna robotic mower FAQ (Irish site, read Oct 26, 2026): the clippings don't need collecting or raking; they mulch into the soil, which Husqvarna says gives a denser, healthier lawn and reduces the need for synthetic fertilizer, and robotic cutting gives finer grass cut at a consistent height. No test data; doesn't cover leaves.
