Can a robot mower cut long grass?

Short answer

Only up to a point. The highest cutting heights we found are about 4 in (Automower 410 iQ, and the High Versions of Mammotion's Luba 3 and LUBA mini 2) and 8 cm on the Ecovacs Goat O800 RTK. Robot mowers are built to keep a lawn short, not to clear it: Husqvarna's own advice is to cut knee-high grass down with a trimmer first, and to start the season with a high cutting height and lower it step by step.

Which robots can do it?

  • Husqvarna Automower 410 iQYes

Husqvarna specs a cutting height of about 1 to 4 in for the Automower 410 iQ, set from the Automower Connect app, and advises starting the season high and lowering it gradually.

Good to know: Maker's spec and advice. Husqvarna says to wait until grass is 2 to 2.8 in tall before the first mow, and to cut overgrown lawns down by hand before a robot takes over.

  • Ecovacs Goat O800 RTKYes

Ecovacs specs a 3 to 8 cm (about 1.2 to 3.1 in) cutting height for the Goat O800 RTK, adjustable in 0.5 cm steps, and lets you set a height per zone.

Good to know: Maker's spec, UK site. Ecovacs doesn't mention tall grass.

  • Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWDYes

Mammotion lists the LUBA mini 2 AWD in a High Version with a 2.2 to 4.0 in cutting height; the Standard Version cuts at 0.8 to 2.6 in.

Good to know: Maker's spec; the Standard Version was out of stock when we read the page.

  • Mammotion Luba 3 AWDYes

Mammotion sells the Luba 3 AWD in a High Version that cuts at 2.2 to 4.0 in; the Standard Version cuts at 1.0 to 2.7 in.

Good to know: Maker's spec. Pick the version when you buy; Mammotion doesn't state a maximum grass height.

Why it matters

After a vacation or a wet spring the lawn is too long, and it's not clear whether a robot mower will cut it or just roll over it.

Not proven yet

The tallest grass each mower can actually cut. No maker we read states a maximum grass height, and we haven't read a test of a robot mower in overgrown grass. The cutting heights here are makers' specs.

Husqvarna support article on preparing the lawn and Automower for the season (Australian site, read Oct 25, 2026): wait until the grass is 5 to 7 cm (2 to 2.8 in) tall before the first mow, start with a high cutting height and lower it gradually, because cutting too short stresses the grass. Selected models offer TargetHeight in the Automower Connect app, which lowers the cutting height step by step on its own. The article doesn't cover mowing tall grass.

Husqvarna guide to cutting an overgrown lawn (New Zealand site, read Oct 25, 2026): take off about half the height on the first cut, with a line trimmer for knee-high grass; trim again a few days later to about 6 inches; mow about 8 days after the first cut and lower the height by about a third each time. Only after that does it suggest a robot mower, to keep the lawn at height on a schedule.
