Can a robot vacuum clean in the dark?
Short answer
Some can. Dreame's X50 Ultra and L40 Ultra have a front LED that lights the way for their obstacle camera in dim rooms, and Roborock labels the Saros 10R's obstacle recognition 'Precise at Night'. iRobot says the LED on its camera Roombas, including the j7 series and the Max 705, isn't bright enough for the robot to run in the dark, so leave a light on for those.
Which robots can do it?
- Dreame L40 UltraYes
Vacuum Wars describes an LED light on the front of the L40 Ultra that lets its camera see in dark places; it tied for second in their obstacle-avoidance course.
Good to know: The LED is a feature description; the review doesn't describe a run in a dark room.
- Roborock Saros 10RYes
Roborock labels the Saros 10R's obstacle recognition, which pairs 3D ToF sensing with an RGB camera, 'Precise at Night'.
Good to know: Maker's label; the page doesn't explain how it works at night and says recognition accuracy may vary with the environment.
- Dreame X50 UltraYes
Dreame says the X50 Ultra's built-in LED lights switch on in dim conditions, such as at night or in low, dark spots, to help it spot obstacles early.
Good to know: Maker's description, not a test. It maps with a DToF sensor and avoids small items with a camera and 3D structured light.
Why it matters
The best time to run a robot vacuum is when nobody's home or everyone's asleep, often with the lights off, and camera robots need to see socks, cables and pet messes to avoid them.
Not proven yet
How well any of these robots avoids obstacles in a fully dark room; we haven't read a test that compares dark and lit runs. Makers also don't say how dark is too dark.

Vacuum Wars' Dreame L40 Ultra review (page says last updated Sep 16, 2026; read Oct 27, 2026): describes an LED light on the front that lets the camera see in dark places. In its obstacle-avoidance course the L40 scored 21, tying for second overall, against an average of 17. The review doesn't describe a test in a dark room.

It maps with a DToF sensor and avoids obstacles with an AI camera and 3D structured light for small items like cables and socks. Listed at AU$2,999.
Read the sourceUS Saros 10R page (read Oct 24, 2026): AdaptiLift chassis crosses thresholds up to 1.57 inches (about 4 cm), including double-layer thresholds. Roborock says, based on its own testing, the mops lift up to 22 mm when the chassis is lifted. Dual anti-tangle system with a DuoDivide main brush that Roborock says ensures a 0% hair tangling rate. StarSight 2.0 navigation and VertiBeam lateral obstacle avoidance. Re-read Oct 27, 2026: obstacle recognition pairs 3D ToF sensing with an RGB camera and is labeled 'Precise at Night'; Roborock notes recognition accuracy may vary with the environment. Re-read Oct 25, 2026: the dock washes the mops with 176°F (80°C) hot water and cleans itself with hot water, then dries the mops with 131°F (55°C) warm air; Roborock says the temperatures come from its own testing at room temperature.
