Can smart glasses translate a conversation live?
Short answer
Yes, roughly. The Meta Ray-Ban Display shows a live text translation in the lens; reviewers found it useful but it misses words, especially fast speech.
Which products can do it?
- Meta Ray-Ban DisplayYes
The Ray-Ban Display shows live captions and translations of the person you're talking to as text in the lens.
Good to know: Missed some dialogue in both tests; four languages at the time of review. Translation drains the battery quickly. $799.
- Meta Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2)Yes
The display-free Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) speaks the translation in your ear; Engadget used it to follow a walking tour abroad.
Good to know: Meant for back-and-forth conversation, not long monologues, and drains the battery fast. From $379.
Why it matters
Holding up a phone to translate breaks the conversation; travelers and mixed-language families want it hands-free.
Not proven yet
Accuracy in noisy places and for languages added after the reviews.

Do smart glasses really translate conversations? (2026)The Meta Ray-Ban Display shows live translations in the lens. How well it works in reviews, which languages, the battery cost, and the privacy questions. How we know (3 sources)
Review of the Ray-Ban Meta (2nd gen), from $379: noticeably better battery (a bit over 5.5 hours of continuous music in testing; Meta says up to eight hours typical), 3K video. Live translation helped the reviewer follow a walking tour in Argentina, though it's meant for back-and-forth conversation and drains the battery fast.
Read the sourceTen days with the $800 Meta Ray-Ban Display: a bright display in the right lens for messages, Meta AI, walking directions, camera preview and live captions and translation. Translation in a real conversation was smoother than on display-free glasses but missed some words. Frames are thick and 69 g; battery runs about six hours and drains much faster with translation or video calls. Few apps so far.
Read the sourceReview (updated Jan 31, 2026): the most complete smart glasses the reviewer has tested, but expensive, with limited third-party apps and half-baked maps. Live captions appear within a second or two; live translation (English, Spanish, French, Italian at the time) was adequate but missed fast dialogue. Battery drained faster than Meta's six-hour figure.
