Can you swim with a smartwatch?

Short answer

Yes, in a pool or the ocean. All six watches we track are rated for swimming: Apple Watch Series 12 and SE 3 to 50 m, Pixel Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch9 at 5 ATM, and Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Galaxy Watch Ultra to 100 m. Of the six, only Apple Watch Ultra 4 is rated by its maker for scuba diving.

Which products can do it?

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch UltraYes

Samsung rates the Galaxy Watch Ultra at 10 ATM (up to 100 m for up to 10 minutes) and IP68 (up to 6 feet for up to 30 minutes).

Good to know: Maker's spec. Samsung's page doesn't rate it for scuba diving. Rinse and dry it after it gets wet.

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch9Yes

Samsung lists Galaxy Watch9 at 5 ATM and IP68, plus the MIL-STD-810H durability standard.

Good to know: Maker's spec from the comparison table on Samsung's US page. Rinse and dry the watch after it gets wet.

  • Google Pixel Watch 5Yes

Google designs Pixel Watch 5 to meet 5 ATM under ISO 22810:2010 and IP68, for use in shallow water.

Good to know: Maker's spec. Google says it isn't waterproof, isn't for high-velocity or high-temperature water, and that liquid damage voids the warranty.

  • Apple Watch SE 3Yes

Apple rates SE 3 water resistant to 50 m under ISO 22810:2010, for shallow-water activities like swimming in a pool or the ocean.

Good to know: Maker's spec. Not for scuba diving, waterskiing, high-velocity water sports or going below shallow depth.

  • Apple Watch Series 12Yes

Apple rates Series 12 water resistant to 50 m under ISO 22810:2010, for pool and ocean swimming, with pool and open-water swim workouts and a depth gauge to 6 m.

Good to know: Maker's spec. Not for scuba diving, waterskiing or other high-velocity water sports.

  • Apple Watch Ultra 4Yes

Apple rates Ultra 4 water resistant to 100 m for swimming, snorkeling, scuba and high-speed water sports, and certifies it to EN13319 for recreational dives to 40 m.

Good to know: Maker's spec. Don't use it below 40 m; diving needs a compatible third-party app, and Apple says to dive with a companion and a backup device.

Why it matters

Taking a watch off for every swim or shower means missed workouts, and a watch that dies in the pool is an expensive mistake.

How long the seals hold up in daily use: Apple and Google both say water resistance isn't permanent and wears off over time. Samsung's footnote for Galaxy Watch9 only spells out the IP68 part (5 feet for 30 minutes). We haven't checked each maker's warranty terms for water damage, except Google's, which says liquid damage voids the warranty. Hot tubs and saunas aren't covered here; Google says Pixel Watch isn't designed for high-temperature water.
