Can a window robot clean the outside of windows?

Short answer

Ecovacs says both Winbots we track can, because their stations carry a battery and a combined power and safety cord, so the robot can work on exterior glass away from an outlet. You still have to place it on the outside pane yourself, so it suits windows you can open or reach.

Which robots can do it?

  • Ecovacs Winbot W2 Pro OmniYes

Ecovacs says the W2 Pro Omni suits indoor windows through exterior glass, including floor-to-ceiling, small, frameless and tilting windows, with a portable battery station.

Good to know: Maker's description; TechRadar's first look covered windows, mirrors and shower doors, not outside panes. See also: can a window robot fall off the glass?

  • Ecovacs Winbot W3 OmniYes

Ecovacs says the W3 Omni's battery lets it clean from indoor windows to exterior glass, plugged in or on battery, on glass at least 3 mm thick.

Good to know: Maker's description and spec. CyberShack's review found it suits large square panes best.

Why it matters

The outside of the windows is the dirty side and the hardest to reach, especially upstairs.

How either robot copes with outdoor grime, wind or rain, and whether it handles your window type; we haven't read a test of either Winbot on exterior glass, and Ecovacs doesn't say anything about double glazing.

  2. CyberShackIndependent

Weeks-long review of the Ecovacs Winbot W3 Omni (AU$1,299), 4.5/5: cleaned better than by hand, with a dock that washes its pads and layered safety (strong suction, about 30 minutes on backup power, a 100 kg safety cord). Leaves a faint pad outline to wipe off, once got stuck on a roller blind, and suits large square panes best.
