Amazon Alexa+ vs Google Home Speaker (Gemini for Home)
3 questions both answer, side by side. Every answer is backed by the dated sources at the bottom.
Side by side
Can one smart home hub run devices from any brand?
Amazon says Alexa controls Matter-enabled devices, and can do it over a local connection for faster, more reliable control.
Good to know: Only Matter (or Zigbee) devices; others still need their own Alexa skill. From Amazon's developer docs.
Google says Gemini for Home controls eligible devices from other brands that connect through Matter or Google's Cloud-to-Cloud integrations.
Good to know: Google's own description. The full Gemini for Home experience runs only on newer Nest speakers and displays and the Google Home Speaker.
Can you set up a smart home routine just by describing it?
Alexa+ creates a routine from a spoken description, such as music and bedroom lights every weekday at 7 AM, and saves it in the Alexa app.
Good to know: Amazon's help page; on compatible Echo and Fire TV devices and in the Alexa app. Alexa+ is free with Prime, $19.99/month otherwise (US).
Gemini's "Help me create" drafts a smart home routine from a description of what you want, as part of Google Home Premium.
Good to know: Google Home Premium Standard is $10/month or $100/year. Gizmodo found it works only in the Google Home app, not by voice on the speaker.
Can you talk to your smart home in normal sentences?
Alexa+ controls smart home devices from natural, everyday phrasing and understands context.
Good to know: Free with Prime, $19.99/month otherwise (US). Sometimes gives wrong facts; the Alexa app is still buggy.
In Gizmodo's review, Gemini for Home on the Google Home Speaker responded quickly and handled complex commands like turning off every light except one.
Good to know: One reviewer's experience; it sometimes ignored questions. Conversational Gemini needs Google Home Premium ($10/month or more), Tom's Guide found.

Can a smart display tell family members apart?
With voice ID and visual ID on the Echo Show 8, 10, 15 and 21, Alexa+ recognizes who is there and delivers reminders meant for them.
Good to know: Each person sets up a profile. Amazon's own description.
How we know (8 sources)
Review of Alexa+: smart home voice control understands natural phrasing ("turn on the light over the sink") and context, and it understands children far better than the old Alexa. It sometimes gave wrong facts and got addresses wrong when booking an Uber. The Alexa app is still buggy, and Echo Show screens still show ads.
Read the sourceAmazon's guide to Alexa+ on Echo devices (read Oct 22, 2026): included with Prime; controls several smart home devices from one sentence; voice ID and visual ID on Echo Show 8, 10, 15 and 21 let Alexa+ recognize individual family members and deliver reminders meant for them.
Read the sourceAlexa+ left early access and opened to everyone in the US: included with Prime, $19.99/month otherwise, plus a usage-limited free tier on Alexa.com and in the app. Works on Echo devices up to eight generations old, Fire TV and Fire tablets; upgrading is voluntary.
Read the sourceAmazon help page "About Routines by Voice with Alexa+" (read Oct 24, 2026): you describe what should happen and when, for example music and bedroom lights every weekday at 7 AM, and Alexa+ saves the routine in the Alexa app, confirming it or reporting errors. Works on compatible Echo devices, the Alexa app and compatible Fire TV devices; actions can be changed or removed right after.
Read the sourceAlexa+ developer docs on smart home options (read Oct 22, 2026): Alexa controls Matter-enabled devices, and Matter lets Alexa and other Matter-certified assistants control a device locally, which Amazon says reduces latency and improves reliability; Zigbee devices can also connect locally.
Read the sourceGoogle developer blog announcing Gemini for Home: it replaces Google Assistant on Google's speakers and displays. People with eligible devices connected through Matter or Google's Cloud-to-Cloud APIs can control them, create automations and search event history in more natural, conversational language, without extra work from device makers. Google counts over 800 million devices connected this way.
Read the sourceReview of the $99 Google Home Speaker: Gemini answers more engagingly than the old Assistant but got a same-day sports result wrong. Gemini for Home comes free with the speaker, but conversational Gemini needs Google Home Premium: Standard ($10/month or $100/year) adds Gemini Live, "Help me create" for describing a routine you want, sound detection and 30 days of video history; Advanced ($20/month) adds camera history search and daily summaries. Full Gemini for Home only on newer Nest speakers and displays.
Read the sourceReview of the Google Home Speaker ($100): fast responses and reliable wake-word pickup; it handled complex commands such as turning off every light except one. It sometimes ignored questions while showing it was listening, and gave unreliable answers. Automations can't be created by voice, only in the Google Home app.
