Do Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini train on your chats? How to opt out
Where it stands
As of Oct 22, 2026, per each company's own pages. These are policies, not independent audits.
Everything you type into an AI assistant goes to the company's servers. Whether it's used to train future models depends on a setting most people never touch.
Claude
Anthropic lists model training as opt-out on Claude's Free, Pro and Max plans: it's on unless you switch it off in your settings.

ChatGPT
OpenAI says it may use conversations to improve model performance and safety, and that you can opt out at any time in Data Controls.

Gemini
With Keep Activity on, Google uses your activity to improve its services, including training generative AI, with help from human reviewers; reviewed chats are disconnected from your account and kept for 3 years.
With Keep Activity off, or in a temporary chat, Google keeps chats for 72 hours and doesn't use them to train its models, unless you send feedback. Turning it off also limits Connected Apps on the web and iPhone.

What should I keep out of any AI chat?
Google's own advice: if Keep Activity is on, don't enter anything confidential you wouldn't want a reviewer to see. The same caution makes sense for any assistant until you've checked its settings.
