Video doorbells and subscriptions: what you really pay (2026)
Where it stands
As of Oct 22, 2026: subscription-free doorbells are on sale; Apple's LG doorbell arrives in December 2026.
Many people buy a video doorbell and only then find out it saves nothing without a monthly plan. Here's how the main approaches compare.
What does a Ring doorbell do without a subscription?
It still sends alerts and lets you watch live and talk to visitors. But Ring doorbells have no built-in storage, so without a paid Ring plan nothing is saved and you can't look back at earlier events. New devices come with a 30-day trial.

Which doorbells record without a fee?
Doorbells with local storage. The Eufy E340 records to 8GB of built-in storage, around a month depending on activity, or to a Eufy HomeBase hub if you have one. The Ambient found no subscription needed for its features, including facial recognition done on the device.

What about Apple's new doorbell?
LG's Video Doorbell Wired for Apple Home costs $249.95 and goes on sale in December 2026. There's no separate camera subscription, but recordings live in iCloud+: $0.99 a month covers one camera, $2.99 five, $9.99 unlimited. Live view and alerts work without it, and you need a HomePod, Apple TV or HomeView as a hub.

Can doorbells recognize faces and packages?
Yes. The Eufy E340 recognizes trained faces on the device and has a second camera watching packages. Apple says the LG doorbell recognizes people, familiar faces, pets, vehicles and packages, also with a second camera on the step.
