Robot vacuums and pets: what tests show on hair and poop
Oct 22, 2026 · 7 sourcesIf you have a dog or cat, two things decide whether a robot vacuum makes life easier or worse: whether hair wraps around its brush, and whether it runs over an accident. We pulled together what independent lab tests and one company guarantee actually show.
The two things that go wrong
Most robots pick up pet hair on hard floors without trouble. Carpet is where they differ, and a robot can pick up hair well and still leave you cutting it off the brush every week.
The other risk is worse: a robot that drives through pet waste spreads it through the house. iRobot is confident enough in its avoidance that it will replace a Roomba j7+ that runs over solid pet waste in the first year.

Hair: four robots, zero tangles
In Vacuum Wars' lab tests, four robots we track picked up most flattened pet hair and none wrapped hair around the brush in their 7-inch hair tangle test. The Dreame X50 Ultra scored highest on pickup (97.5), followed by the Mova V70 Ultra Complete (94), the Eufy Omni S2 (88.5) and the Roborock Saros 20 (88).
These are results on one unit each, in a lab. They say nothing yet about how a brush holds up after a year of shedding.

Accidents: who avoids them, and who guarantees it
On Vacuum Wars' 24-object obstacle course, which includes simulated pet waste, the Eufy Omni S2 avoided all 24 objects and the Mova V70 Ultra Complete avoided 23.
Only iRobot puts a promise behind it: a replacement Roomba j7+ if it runs over solid dog or cat waste within a year, in the US. Lab courses use stand-ins, not the real thing, so a test score is a good sign, not a guarantee.

What to check before you buy
Look for three things: a tested pet hair score on carpet, zero or near-zero tangles, and obstacle avoidance tested on pet waste stand-ins. If you have rugs and want mopping too, check that the robot lifts its mop on carpet or can leave the pads at the dock.

Notes that most robots handle pet hair on hard floors, carpet shows the biggest differences, and good pickup can still come with frequent brush clean-up if hair wraps.
