Translation earbuds only work with the right phone
Oct 23, 2026 · 6 sourcesLive translation is the reason many people look at new earbuds. The catch nobody puts on the box: the translating happens on your phone, not in your ears. Buy earbuds that don't match your phone and the feature you paid for won't work. Here's what Apple, Google and Samsung each require, from their own pages.
The catch: your phone does the translating
All three brands work the same way. The earbuds pick up the other person's voice, your phone translates it, and the translation plays in your ear. Your own reply shows on the phone's screen or plays from its speaker.
That's why each brand ties translation to its own phones, and why the phone you already own decides which earbuds make sense.

iPhone: AirPods Pro 3
Apple's Live Translation works with AirPods Pro 3 (and Pro 2, AirPods 4 with noise cancellation, AirPods 5 and AirPods Max 2), but only with an iPhone 15 Pro or newer on iOS 26 with Apple Intelligence on. Once you've downloaded both languages, the translating happens on the iPhone itself.
It also works on Phone and FaceTime calls. Apple still labels it beta and warns translations can be wrong.

Android: Pixel Buds Pro 2
Google's Pixel Buds Pro 2 translate in two ways: a listening mode that streams translated speech into your ear, and a conversation mode for back-and-forth talk. They need a Gemini-compatible Android phone with Gemini as the default assistant, and an internet connection.
Google says translation may not be instantaneous and isn't available in every language or country.

Samsung: Galaxy Buds4 Pro
Samsung's Interpreter translates face-to-face conversations in 22 languages with Galaxy Buds4 Pro, and translates calls in the Samsung Phone app on a Galaxy S26. It needs a Galaxy phone with Galaxy AI on One UI 6.1.1 or later.

Battery: enough for a day of travel
Apple rates AirPods Pro 3 at up to 8 hours with noise cancellation, 24 with the case. Samsung rates Galaxy Buds4 Pro at 6 hours with noise cancellation, 26 with the case, and Google rates Pixel Buds Pro 2 at up to 30 hours with the case. These are listening figures; the makers don't say how much translation shortens them.
