My home has stairs

Robot vacuums stop at the top step. Here's what can get past steps and between floors today, and what's still a prototype.

Can a robot vacuum get over high door thresholds?

Yes, for steps of a few centimeters. The Dreame X50 Ultra lifts itself over raised thresholds, though it won't climb a staircase.

In stores now

  • Dreame X50 Ultra

The X50 Ultra climbs over raised thresholds on its own; Dreame quotes up to 6 cm.

Coming or still in demos

Nothing announced beyond what's in stores.

Why it's hard: How reliably it clears every threshold type. One reviewer had to mark a threshold as passable by hand.

Can a robot vacuum clean stairs yet?

Not one you can buy. Roborock showed a stair-climbing prototype at CES 2026, but it has no release date.

In stores now

Nothing you can buy for this yet.

Coming or still in demos

  • Dreame Cyber XAnnounced

Dreame's Cyber X module carries compatible vacuums up stairs; Dreame quotes steps up to 25 cm.

  • Roborock Saros RoverAnnounced

Roborock says the Saros Rover climbs and cleans straight, curved and carpeted stairs.

Why it's hard: Price, release date, and how well the prototype cleans stairs in real homes. All stair claims so far come from Roborock and show-floor demos.
